About Breaking the Rules
Examine the rules. Choose consciously. Reclaim your mental sovereignty.
Where do unhelpful rules come from?
We are absorbing more unexamined rules than any generation in history.
Our parents absorbed rules from family, local culture, maybe television.
We are absorbing rules from:
Multiple social media platforms (each with different norms)
Hundreds of influencers (with conflicting advice)
Workplace hustle culture
Diet and wellness industry
The self-optimisation industrial complex
Algorithms designed for engagement, not wellbeing
Plus all the traditional sources (family, peers, media)
Hundreds of messages daily about how to be successful, attractive, productive, valuable, safe.
We cannot possibly examine them all consciously. So they run on autopilot. Competing, conflicting, and fragmenting us.
This is not personal failure. This is what happens when cultural messaging multiplies faster than our capacity to examine it.
The anxiety, burnout, and disconnection you are feeling is not you being bad at life.
It is you running incompatible programmes simultaneously and wondering why the system keeps crashing.
What is Breaking the Rules about?
This is not about ‘finding yourself’ or manifesting your dreams.
It is about:
Making the invisible visible → Surfacing the unwritten rules that have been driving your choices, behaviors, and self-perception
Examining them critically → Where did they come from? Do they actually serve you? Or are they serving someone else's agenda?
Choosing consciously → Deciding which rules you want to keep, which to modify, and which to discard entirely
Reclaiming agency → Living by values you have consciously chosen rather than programming you have unconsciously absorbed
Mental sovereignty means knowing which rules you are following and choosing them deliberately—not just absorbing whatever the loudest voices broadcast.
You get to decide. But first, you have to see what you are deciding about.
About Dr Natalie Chambers
Dr Natalie Chambers: experienced, HPCP Registered & BPS Chartered Counselling Psychologist.
I have worked in the field of mental health for more than two decades, with experience spanning the NHS, student counselling, the military and private practice. Having worked with hundreds of individuals over the years, I have come to recognise certain truths…
Life throws challenges at all of us at one time or another.
And for the most part, people find ways to soldier on - adapting to the new ‘rules of the game’.
If I just work harder…
If I always please others…
If I look a certain way…
These rules might serve you very well for a time, maybe even for many years… until they don’t. And of course my personal experience is no different.
I am passionate about supporting people to step out of autopilot and reclaim their mental sovereignty by examining the unconscious rules running their lives.
